Egypt Travel Deals

Egypt is a Middle Eastern country and has strong Middle Eastern customs. Whether Muslim or Copt, the Egyptian people are deeply religious and religious principles govern their every day lives. Combine this religious belief with a strong commitment to the extended family and this makes up the social order in Egypt.

Each family member is responsible for the integrity of the family and for the conduct of the other members, creating a society that would be envied by many people in the West. The result is that the city of Cairo is safer than any western city of equal size and population.

Yet when people from western cultures visit Egypt they are often initially apprehensive. Their views of Egyptians and Arabs, formed often by unkind and manufactured media stories, bear no relation to reality experienced. Travelers are often pleasantly surprised by the friendly, hospitable reception they receive and when they travel home many people take with them good feelings about Egypt and its people.

Egyptians have been raised in a social environment rooted in Islam, a background that can affect their decision making in a way difficult for outsiders to understand. Yet it is precisely this way of thinking that makes Egyptians some of the most charming and generous of hosts. By understanding more about the culture and showing consideration for your hosts, you will be a very welcome guest in Egypt.

Probably the most famous image of Egypt is the only survivor of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramids of Giza. They still live up to what has been over 4000 years of hype. The extraordinary shape, geometry and their sheer age make them seem somehow alien creations; they seem to just appear out of the desert and pose the question of how were they built, and for what purpose.

Hundreds of years of research have shown us some of the answers to this question. We do know they were built as massive tombs erected on the orders of the ruling pharaohs by teams of workers tens of thousands strong, many of them skilled workers together with a slave albour force. This is backed up by the discovery of a pyramid workers town, complete with areas assigned to produce large amounts of food and also evidence of a medical facility to treat the workers. Continuing excavations on the Giza Plateau are providing more and more evidence that the workers were not all slaves as in the tradition put forward in Hollywood films, but they were a rather highly organised workforce of Egyptian farmers.

During the season when the annual Nile flood made tending to the fields impossible, the same farmers may well have been redeployed by the highly structured bureaucracy to work on the pharaoh's tomb. The Pyramids can almost be seen as a way to keep the populaution working. One benefit of the flood waters was that it made it easier to transport building stone to the site.

Egypt truly is a country steeped in history and traditions, which has been visited by millions of people from all corners of the world. If you are a traveller looking to explore and have yet to visit this wonderful country it is certainly worth planning a trip there to experience its wonders.
