like the idea of a villa holiday rather than staying in a hotel - so

There is no doubt that the hotel-based holiday can be great fun - particularly if you are fortunate with your choice of hotel. However, even the best hotels can sometimes be a little impersonal and inclined to cramp your style just a bit. If they are too large, some may find them to be a little intimidating but by contrast, if they are too small they may seem to be a little bit restrictive. Hotel dining may be fine but it's not perhaps an environment in which it is easy to 'let your hair down' as you eat.
That is why some people enjoy the freedom and individuality of a villa based holiday. On the island of Menorca, villas are available in many different locations and to suit all budgets and group sizes. Some may be luxury villas with their own extensive gardens and a private swimming pool. Others may form part of small and discreet developments with a shared pool and perhaps additional shared facilities such as kindergartens or child-minding. Having a villa will enable you to choose what you eat and when, and do so in the relative privacy of your own accommodation.

Menorca villas and culture
As a Mediterranean island, Menorca has incorporated much of its development as a tourist destination into its prevailing small-island culture. With a few exceptions, resorts are typically quieter and a little more family-oriented than may be the case on other islands such as Ibiza and Majorca. That is not to say that many of the resorts do not have a vibrant nightlife - they do! It is more a case that the island has managed to retain a charm that other parts of the Mediterranean may have lost as part of the price of their development.
Much accommodation on the island, outside of Mahon and Ciutadella, is based around the coastal areas and the associated holiday resorts. Many of these resorts are located on beautiful stretches of beaches (the island boasts over 150) and vary from what are still essentially fishing villages, right up to sophisticated and chic holiday locations.
On Menorca, villas are to be found in most resort locations. They are typically found on the outskirts of resorts rather than in the very centre, though there may be some exceptions to this.
As a result, if you are thinking of a villa based holiday, it might be prudent to include in your budgeting an amount for a rental car, as this may be essential in many cases. You may also find that some villas are based in areas that are rural and entirely undeveloped. That may allow you the opportunity to explore the hinterland and to discover a traditional and less touristy Balearic lifestyle.
If you like slightly more independence on holiday and plan to stay on Menorca, villas may be an option well worth considering further.
